My heart bleeds to see the avenue trees on G N Chetty road being hacked off. G N Chetty road is one of the very few areas to have the luxury of avenue trees and where we can get some get some clean air when we drive down after all the engines have finished choking coughing and sputtering on those roads. Mom and I caught a few glimpses of the trees being hacked off late last night while driving back from a movie.
I HATE IT.

Hey Chinmayi,
They are probably being hacked off to widen the road...Well, large trees from the famous Mumbai-Pune expressway were uprooted along with roots and the soil stuck to them and planted elsewhere....these guys should be doing the same instead of hacking them off!!!!

i stay in Tnagar , few mins from G.N.Chetty Road and i feel the same heart felt reaction when i see the bare road .
It was one of the best roads in Chennai , which was cool and green....
Glad that a friend of mine voiced the same opinion i was shouting all along

and btw who needs a flyover in G.N.Chetty Road which has the least traffic.....

Thats horrible !! Trees are gifts to our enviroment !! Having trees around are one of the main reason why global warming has not destroyed the face of earth yet ! *Haiz* By hacking the trees , Its gonna cause more enviromental hazards to the surroundings !! Pity Ull !!

I do not know why the axe falls on the tree with so much enthusiasm in Chennai than any other public works. I've had this similar feeling when 100s of fully-grown huge trees were cut on the road that leads to Porur in the name of road expansion. I saw the gradual death of these trees everyday as we sat on the college bus. This happened almost 11 years back and I still have nightmares about it and wake up from my sleep. In fact in one of the campus interviews that I attended where a topic of group discussion was being floated, I brough up the topic of the importance of greenery and avenue trees in a hot & urban place like Chennai. You wouldn't believe it that I did not make it through the interview because the topic was not interesting to the folks there.

All the best roads in Chennai seem to be losing the precious tree cover (Kotturpuram road, Sardar Patel, Radhakrishnan Salai road to name a few).

During my last trip to India, I made it a point to plant some saplings in the road where our apt. is. My mom with the help of some auto drivers in that area take care of them. My biggest dream is to make Chennai a forested place when I settle back in India. I hope that my dreams come true.

But it is nice to see that many citizens of Chennai seem to share the same feeling as me. I'm sure that a green revolution will happen pretty quick.

It would be great if we can do one step better by not just cribbing online, but taking it up with the concerned authorities.

Chinmayi, it would be great if you highlight such issues in your show, maybe for 5-10 minutes a day, and it would be awesome if someone who calls the authorities shares their experience with other listeners. I think there are enough concerned citizens/listeners who would be peeved by this and similar issues, who can jam the concerned office and with their complaint.

I have been following your blog for a while now, this is my first comment. I absolutely love your blog.

I only know how heartbroken I was when my 'flame of the forest' in front of my home was axed because a cable tv wire has to be distributed to the next door. I uprooted the cable wire's pillars and fought with them to not do these kind of things.. they were private, had brains, understood, my tree is back, but this is done by government!!! They woudln't even know what 6th sense means...

I come from the garden city, Singapore. For us the road is not complete without trees at the sides. Even in the road dividers we have flowering bushes.
What Harm is this little tress going to do? It is an eye sore to see barren sidewalks. Don’t forget the shade it would provide the passersby.

Oops thats really bad :( i saw trees being removed on kotturpuram road/adyar cancer institute for widening the roads sometime back...but i believe they were going to plant the trees elsewhere.

what can we do? a few people would say for the common good, but seriously if you ask me,we don't require a flyover there...

While it is really sad to see these mighty trees fall, are there any new spalings being planted elsewhere in the city. Is Chennai losing more green cover or is being compensated with new ones? If anyone can shed light on it, will be much appreciated. Thanks,

people must know that for every tree they cut they must plant 5 more trees .

this is really sad. i hope more pple will try their hand at planting more trees. for myself, i've always been attracted to diggin up soil and getting my hands dirty and i'm proud to say that a number of mango saplings owe their existense to me.
