"Comma"

Strange as it may sound, it was one of those rare occasions that I switched on the TV and I happened to see the news of Benazir Bhutto assasinated. And thereafter, needless to say, I continued watching. After a while, I guess Pranab Mukherjee is the first person from the India to express his views and I had a feeling that I heard him say "comma" and "Full-stop" in his short speech expressing "shock". Well I couldn't really be sure and then I heard him say daaa-da-da-da-dadada- "comma" da--dadada---dada on camera, the previous one was a phone-in. I am still trying to figure out whether that was some Bengali accented random English word. Ah well.

:). It is likely to be an accented english word.

It seems, Any talk requires a rehearsal or he might be tensed(for wht?)

Did he give his speach in English or Bengali in the first place?

And, may be he is more comfortable using (may be in his own slang) those comma and full stop to be more clear or to cover his nervousless or something like that!

He must have been dictating a statement to his PA for a press release and the TV reporter there might have got a sound bite from him while he was doing so.

Chinmayi I too noticed it.. As long as our country is ruled by these oldies india is gonna continue like this. What was the need for them to refer to the paper each and every second.. cant they at least make an attempt to seem natural.

maruthu: in response.. The assassination of Bhutto is definitely disturbing, but I know nothing of her, and I will definitely not comment on something as sensitive as Pakistan. Just as you noticed what I have not said, there will be more attention paid to what I do, and you cannot blame me. Pathetic or not.

i felt bad about it too... the external affairs minister is expected to convey what India feels in a sincere and heartfelt way. He hardly reached out. His oration was pathetic and so was the grammar. Really sad...

Hi Chinmayi

Just happen to see this blog of yours only now.

Decades back I was employed in North India. I had a colleague by name Varadachari, who was working for the company's MD, a Bengalee. Varadachari mentioned me this anecdote then: His boss was once looking for my colleague, and had called out someone nearby and shouted: "Why Baradachari is bandering in the berandah?" You can decipher what this meant! (Replace the Bs with Vs).
