A lot of notes on why I sign off with Shabba Khair and Godspeed, given that most people might not know what it means.
Well my thought is if something sounds new, the first thing that 99% of the people do is to find out what it is. Or at least attempt.
I sign off saying Godspeed on my live show on radio. More or less a lot of people might be headed off to do a lot of important things at the time I sign off from the show, around 10.00 AM and a positive word would definitely put in a lot of good vibes. Of course that is my opinion. Saying a lot of good things, good words, promoting good thoughts is generally my modus operandi on the show. There is enough and more negativity that crowds us right from the time we open our morning paper or switch on the TV for latest news. Hardly find anything good sounding. There is so much focus on the negative and the wrong that the "good" gets drowned in this whole murk.
Coming back, Shabba Khair means Good night. In a different language. In the previous seasons, when I signed off saying Adios/Adieu/Ciao, there were hardly any comments eventhough, obviously a lot of people might not now. And Godspeed is Good fortune.
Thought they are nice words to hear at the end of the day, if of course, Airtel Super Singer 2008 is the last show they watch on TV before they switch it off.

Just being Curious...If u were to sign off in Tamizh... What word or phrase would you choose then? :)
they use it somewhere in Holland rite ? one of my friends there told me this and I was spreading it like fire.
Every time i watched Super Singer, somebody around there would turn to me and ask wat shab ba khair meant? .. as if i was the one who said it on TV.
Luckily i knew the answer.
anyway, its Fun watching you and Shab ba khair :)
cheers,
Chan.

Not Holland. Its Urdu.
Suresh: I usually say "stay glued"
Curious: Just plain old Vanakkam maybe..
Chinmayi.. we are from Ireland.
There is no streaming of Star Vijay in Star bouquet of channels in Sky.
I have already asked them to add this channel. We watch Super singer regularly. Recently there is a big disappointment in the eliminations. Madhumitha shouldnt have been eliminated. Go to Vijay Super Singer Forum in Indya.com and read all about it. http://forum.indya.com/showthread.php?p=1274684&posted=1#post1274684.
I felt very bad. Will you please please please pass on our views to the judges and give Madhumitha a wild card entry. Thanks in advance. Keep compering like this.. enjoying every bit of it.
Regards
I have personally felt most of the times Urdu words are so poetic that it gives a pleasing and appealing sensation while hearing it. No wonder it is so nice to hear "Shabba Khair"while signing off... (Not sure if this is how they pronounce it: "Shab-e-khair") but damn!! when I utter it, it really sucks big time that even I hate it to hear from my mouth. So it is not only the word but again the way it has to be utterred. Wish I could also... But anyways there is always a joy while hearing it!!
Godspeed :) the word that is hardly used in this century has such a beautiful meaning attached to it. I guess it was first used by the Middle english translators of the Holy Bible , predominantly in the Old Testament to indicate a God-inspired prosperity and seeking God's blessing on his or her endeavor. There are other views that the term Godspeed may have been derived from the term "good-speed" a wish for a speedy journey aided by favorable winds and sailing conditions!!
I have always enjoyed and loved hearing it when you use those words. Thanks!
Din sara gujara tore angana
mere yar shabba khair

Pls Sing " Kuraiyondrum illai "...& dedicate it to the world ...
that is the only song which would be with all the people in any emotion n feel & take us to GOD ...kind of feel .....
keep it n a corner f mind & try it....in a very gallant way...
definitely ur effort with that wil last for a long long long.....
and really that would be 'The Greatest' of ur dedications to not only the musical world, but to the entire Tamil society....
Thanks mayi...
...and you know What it means by Chinmayi !
I guess you know but just for others
'chinmaye means - pure consciousness, personification of conscious action'.
Reference is in Lalitha Sahasranama stothram.
I reckon you are aptly named as your personality reflects.
Best,

Hi Chinamyi, how are you?
This is the second time I am on your blog - once before to know more about you during the first Super Singer show couple years ago and now again after watching the third part of the same show - singing in different languages few minutes ago.
I was very disappointed by your comments for the last singer, Vijay - "Englees...englipish..idhu enna namma gummidipundi englisha enna?..?. - very demoralizing.
Honestly, he gave us all a wonderful performance - very confident, good lyrics, very good style, etc.,
I meant to write to you on couple other such incidents in the past on your radio show (my home theatre streams aahaafm.com 24x7)but I could not resist today.
I see lot of +ve comments on your blog - well moderated, but thought it would not hurt to have couple genuine -ve comments too.
Please put yourself in his position and imagine how you would have felt if someone had commented like that when you strated off with that Arabic song in the beginning of the show - a language that most of us don't even understand.
I could not find a way to convey this to you than your blog - pardon my ignorance.
Take Care,
Chandil
My apologies, if you see multiples of this post.
Just a small note on yesterday's Super Singer Event. Well ,dedications to relationships being the flavour for the week , there was a blend of emotions along with the singing from the participants . And yes , it looked good to see the varied hues of human touch that lingered all the way long ... but lo , the elimination literally marred the context :( .Eliminations could have been avoided in this round considering the fact that there was an outpour of emotions that played a major role more than the talent exhibit ... the eliminations could have been clubbed with the next round , preferably the number raised and eventually would have marked a good ending for the week's flavour.Disappointments owing to eliminations in the other rounds are very much justified , its a talent show and yes it has to happen ,but in this round , it had lots to do with near & dear ones , so it kinda leaves a very depressing note .... wht say Chinmayi ????
oh ohh
its that aaaaa
stay glued
thanks for replying me chinmayee
Hey Chinmayee,
Thanks for taking time to respond to my query :) I agree...it's always good to know new words. I am one of those that looks up new words and phrases that I hear as well. Just didn't think that people that aren't exposed to different languages and cultures would understand what you said. Just an observation....not a criticism and I hope u take that in the spirit with which it is intended.
And, in my part of the world, it's nighty night...so Shabba Khair! :)
oh.. Ok
Well, i still rechecked it. They say the same in surnami /sarnami language aswell itseems.
And its spoken somewhere around that dutch area, itseems.
So, i tot you where using surnami/sarmani or what ever :)
cheers,
Chan
I am one of the many people who has turned to Google to find out the meaning of Godspeed and Shabba khair! (Wonder what would life be without Google)
Lovely words and you truly sign off in style on every episode! Love the 'stay glued' too.
Godspeed good girl!
-Hima
to chandil: Its very tough to communicate the vibes and the relationship that the contestants and I share. Each time its almost like we are all classmates and there is a lot of fun that happens off camera. Sometimes it comes on-camera as well. As a continuation of what was happening behind the screens. The whole episode as you know was full of light-hearted comments and jibes. Maybe someone could take super offense to the Ravi-Prasanna exchange. Its all in the game dude. Dont attach too much importance for something that was jocular.
ha ha.. it is "stay glued".. :)
thank god... he asked it..
Chinmayi.. i would like to give my view to chandil. Sorry for using ur space...
@ Chandil...
I think it didn't hurt anyone...because we 40 of us together watched ASS on that day... no one felt bad... be frank we all enjoyed...... because it was J4F.. not meant to hurt anyone....
@ Chinmayi...
only one thing we felt bad... S. Madhumitha got eliminated.... Raginisri is in .....
Last round (Dedicate to anyone) - elimination irunthurukka koodathu.... it was so touching....
Congrats!! You break your own record of posting more than 120 blogs in a year. Keep blogging!!
As I could not listen to your radio programmes I haven't heard your "Godspeed, shabba khair". but heard them thro one of your old posts ( canada concert).Thats time itself I felt, for sure it creates positive vibes. God bless you for all the wonderful things you do and the kindness you spread.
I too felt Raginisri is favoured.
@ Raji & Vids
//
Last round (Dedicate to anyone) - elimination irunthurukka koodathu....//
Ditto, I completely agree this..
//Disappointments owing to eliminations in the other rounds are very much justified , its a talent show and yes it has to happen ,but in this round , it had lots to do with near & dear ones , so it kinda leaves a very depressing note .... wht say Chinmayi ????///
Couldn't agree mote...
@ Chinmayi, I think whole world is on the same note that Madhumita S should not have been elimiatated (if at all it should be Ragnishri that day) and also no one liked the elimination in the dedication round!!!
Pls convey this messages to the VijayTV folks and the judges...
Also one can easily see the partiality shown by judges...
Hi chinmayee.. thanks for the meaning of those words.. you have mentioned once tat ur singing n speaking voice r poles apart.. I love the songs u hv rendered in ur speaking voice like oru deivam thandha, tere bina, chilama, mayya mayya, konjam konjam.. n lot of western nos which u rendered in ASS shows. I have always wondered why cudnt try 'singara velane deva' n few melodies which u hv sung in diff shows in ur original voice.. U adapt it differently.. I feel 'singara velane deva' madri songs ku innnum konjam kooda azhutham venum.. wht say.. Hey miss u da song is cool, vry diff genre..u rock in 'yemmini,yemmini'..
Anonymous, Not the whole world is on the same note.. I feel judges are judges.. they have better experience n know much better than the audience.. there r 3 judges.. n all the 3 cannot afford to be biased .. Nobody knows wat actually happens there.. so lets nt judge..
And excuse me, why s a huge gang, against raginisri.. I saw lot of comments in techsatish too.. she s such a talented, beautiful singer with great attitude.. no wonder she impresses the judges inspite of cracks in her voice.. its a talent show.. look at the talent n get inspired.. dont be jealous n complaint/blame.. I dont how it personally feels to be there.. I missed it.. but as a show to watch i dont have any complaints..
ramya
One more thing, Adios, Adieu , ciao all r common.. Adieu, ciao - lot of anchors use thm n corporates also we use.. n Adios became popular frm shakkalakka baby song.. So godspeed n shabba khair were new..
ramya
Ramya: when the first corporate perhaps used ciao or adieu it would have been new.. someone starts something thats all.. :) and then it catches on
I have sung singara velane already on the show. perhaps you missed it. And as for the "azhutham" I have a different opinion, but I shall reserve my comments. and I have never understood the original voice concept. the voice is my own, I have not begged borrowed or stolen it from someone else :D I guess I just modulate it sometimes. I guess that is me. Sometimes its a conscious effort, sometimes its not.
!!!! wow...blog@speedofthought apdinu u can publish a book :D athukulla 3 posts!! ilati blog adikaratha outsource panirukeengala? :D anyways..oru gud bye solla ivlo languagea..parunga embutu expln thara vendirukunu :D try tata bye bye cheerio for a change
Hi Chinji
Shabba Khair sounds too alien, something like "Subh rathri" or the plain "Good night" would make sense to the majority of the viewers who don't understand Urdu.
A request: I would like you to ask the producers of the show (maybe you can even do it) to make the contestants mention the name of the music director, singers and the lyricist of the song before they start singing. After all they are using these people's work for their claim to fame.
Thanx
Nishanth
Chinmayee,
I dont think that your purpose of saying 'shabba khair' or 'Godspeed' really serve the purpose rather the audience get confused.
Please use the language that major audience could understand well. " Nalam Undahattum" "Vazhga Vazhamudan" "Nanri, Vanakkam" "Suham Undahattum" are the words that I will use if I were you.
Let the well educated audience and your blog readers love those words when used in your internet communications.
Believe you would consider it.
Wishes to your superb compering.
Hi Chinmayi
YOu could anyday use Indian well wishing words. They are so much and profound.
Shabba Khair sounds strange and alien- (Arabic). When there are very many beautiful words in Indian culture, why choose a foreign language? Namma enna avvallavu nalinja language- aa vechindu irukkom?
Lastly, One of the judges seem to pass adverse observations on vijay for choosing to sing hariharan's song. You might say its all fun, but we sincere viewers dont want comments even from judjes that indicate a bias( though one can see a clear bias in favour of Ravi and Raginisri and a negative bias on Madhumitha who got eliminated in other language round and Vijay)
Ramya, Are you related to raginishri...LOL
Ramya, I dont think anybody is jealous over raginishri to make such comments.
For me, I have a good opinion on vijay TV shows, since they have a class. I dont think , raginishri being beautiful can stop any such comments from any of us. Atleast my point was, her talent is not flawless to have made her come till point in competitions..She has to be beautiful in her singing too.Not crack in all her higher notes. And some comments which were made to other participants by judges are simply not spoken when it comes to raginishri.. There is something reaaaaaaly fishy about this. Thats all..There is no ganging up ..come on...
Chinmayi.
What is your reply for our posts on Madhumitha's Elimination. We are eager to know that you are cascading our thoughts to judges.
anonymous: Sorry I am not interested .. maybe there should be someone on your strata :)
Hey chinmayi!!!
Didn't expect u to have a entry on my query but thanks alot for publishing an entry solely for the meaning of "Shabba Khair" & "God Speed".... seriously feels great learning two new words...
well for now shabba khair
hi chinmayi
me ajay from singapore... i have been a regular viewer of airtel super singer and am really fond of the program considering myself as a avid follower of music.. i really was surprised to find u today morning in the bloggin ckt n orkut toooooo (a frnd of my senior kiran)... I was askin bout the meanin of shabba khair and me happy to find it here...
hope u continue ur good work and hats off for ur melodies as i admire them...
sabha kher is spoken in holland which says good nite.
kalakunga chinmayi.
Perumal vegam nallavargalukku :D
Have not read your posts in a long time, today after Super singer got over, I wanted to ask you about the Shabba khair and Godspeed... and I read this post!
But, why in foreign language?
When there is a why, I ask a why-not? :)
I have always signed off in a foreign tongue.
Hi Chinamyi,
Most of the viewers have questioned you about Shabba khair and Godspeed... The request is why not Shubha Ratri or Vazhga Vazhamudan. After all these are from the oldest languages on earth.
I do understand that each of us have our own taste and styles. But the request is why can't you say them too?
Your rendition of 'Where is the party' from Silambattam with Mukesh was too good. It was the first time I heard the song and felt it was catchy in the first listen itself. Immediately searched for the song and heard the original version as well.
Hey Chinmayi,
I really like the idea of using new words, it sure does draw curiosity and attention.
I wanted to appreciate you for the stupendous job you are doing as an anchor in Airtel SS '08. You are a very charming anchor and one of the best anchors I have seen on Tamil TV's including few other anchors in Vijay TV. Keep up the sprit and I am sure you are going to reach greater heights in you life. And btw, why do you disappear from the program every now and then?! Is it the new schedule or you have some other work?!
Anyway, I will you all the best and and take care!
Shabba Khair!
(Imitation is the Best Compliment! :-)
Warm Regards,
Balaji
Haiyo Haiyo. I thought Shabba Khair means some word like Vaalha Valamudan and i even used it to wish everyone whom i meet even at day times. Ippidi Mokkai kuduthutteengaley....... Athe Pesaama Good Night nu solli irukkalaame..... Y This Kolaveri...............
