Does an artiste exist and prosper because of his talent/expertise in the art
or because of fans?
Would love to know your opinion just to see what common viewpoints are like.

Well..I feel talent is the main factor..But yes, fans do play a significant role in elevating the person..
There is also a 3rd important factor which I feel you missed - LUCK/FORTUNE :)
I think its talent. If one don't have talent, how and for what would one have fans?

IMHO, an artist exists by himself. , but to prosper, he usually needs fans
for me it is a give and take subject.... a person perform his/her talent and the talent gets recognized by so called fans.... but if there is no fan for a particular talent, the same talent doesn't get enough of exposure and thus the heights. the great talent becomes of no use. may be i should say the journey for the talent becomes tougher.

I also think PASSION should be accompanied with the talent... at times that is what which does the work of a hard core fan.
Def with Talent.Talent fetches fan(s)..
You would definitely a platform or an opportunity to showcase your talent. When people like it they become your fans. If you are smart enough to grab the seat in the platform i.e hard work, you can prosper for ever. Fans come and go .
Talent/expertise, any day !
கிரக அமைப்பு நன்றாக இருந்தால் , ஆண்டி அரசன் ஆவான்.
மோசமாக இருந்தால் அரசன் ஆண்டி ஆவான்.
Since it is only between the two -talent and fans to choose, it is the talent.
9 out of 10 will say this.
To the question, in my opinion, it's because of the fans. The talent has already done it's part of creating the fan clubs. The aftermath of that huge response gets the artiste more chances to showcase his talents.
Also, if your question is with response to the current sensational hit, I'd like to mention that fan clubs can be created based on anything not just the talents of the artiste.
easy! its like a business. Talent is d investment u make. good enough and you'll get good outcome which i would like to refer to d fans. d only difference from business is, to prosper talent must be propagated throughout so that the outcome doubles. just like you. =)
To exist you need talent for sure. And to prosper, fan following is advantage. If one exercise his or her expertise to have fan following he/she would prosper even more.
A little bit of both, you need talent to cross certain border than you will need loyal supporters to help you cross another border. There are many untalented people who have become famous/rich without having any talent. Eg : Jessica Black
Without fans, there will not be demand in any platform, i mean, who will be there to watch you (speaking in general), who will pay for the tickets, artwork and etc?
But ofcourse you gain a fan through talent. The talent you have, brought you friends, fans and enemies and that's only because you are doing it right!
If you have only fans, than you are in a lot of trouble! So yes, you need talent to gain fans and you need fans to showcase your talent.
Well both have a major role to play. But i think real talent always has an edge over fans. It's the artiste's unique skills and works that fetches her a name amongst people(How many could sing ஒரு தெய்வம் தந்த பூவே as eloquent as you did?)
Then people start supporting the artiste. She becomes a celebrity. Fans' encouragement makes her go great guns. Now a days fans are becoming so devotional that they even follow their off screen activities. So in my view talent gives artist an identity and healthy fans which helps her achieve things both ON/OFF screen...
DESTINY.
One cannot avoid stardom, if their time has come & One cannot get it even if they are immensely talented,
As long as they are not WILLED TO.
I would say due to fans, if there are no fans then the artiste performs/creates for their own satisfaction and fulfillment.
With the presence of fans (and a market for the artistes talent) it becomes more than a hobby, giving them satisfaction, fame, money etc "x" times more than it just being a hobby.
One can become an artist only if he/she has got something special..(skill/talent).And to exist as an artist, obviously support is necessary, from fans and the society...i think so
you must be in the right place at the right time, ofcourse with talent. rest will follow. mere talent and not in the right place at the right time will take u nowhere.
no talent means no fans :D
I don't see talent and fanfare going together. If you tend to change yourself for your fans, you are under pressurre. That means you don't do justice to your talent. If you stick to your talents and carry on with it passionately, you maybe be regarded a renegade. Thats the world I notice around me. Wild ain't it?
It's obvious that they shine through their talent and gain fans in the process. Also their success multiplies with the way they do things differently.
this is not related to the post.i have been reading your post and its great, your language skills is simply superb.as a fan of yours i request you to start blogging in TAMIL.Why English alone, please respect tamil as well, only by singing tamil songs you had this fortune.you are happy with the fortune, but you can be even more happier if you start writing in tamil.
There is more than these two factors!

Singing alone in a room and singing in front of a mammoth crowd has difference... talent will fetch money and fame for an artist.. but for them,i feel a little recognition or praiseless compliments will give the unfound happiness/self satisfaction in their life, which crores can't give...without that how can an artist excel and prosper.. if that so then what to say about uncondional love of fans... but at the start it matters big for them..then they get used to it..like the proverb "Familiarity breeds contempt" slowly fans may be felt as unwanted elements.. there may or maynot be reasons 4 that...there r too much of talented artists who excel in their field without fan following..it does'n means that they dont have fans...they believe that evry one r thier fans...one thing for sure, for an artist it completely depends on one's self satisfaction...but again Singing alone in a room and singing in front of a mammoth crowd has difference...
It is the classic conundrum. is it the chicken or the egg that came first?
Chinmayi
Super smile; super dress....... idu ellam vida awesome koral u got.
Truly thankful to god for having blessed us with a well rounded "singer". Truly an inspiration, for aspiring singers.
Na singer illa, but I am one of the many gobsmacked by your awesomeness. Love you Chinmayi.
A combination of many factors, not necessarily in the same order:
1. Talent
2. Opportunity (being at the right place at the right time, availability of resources, etc)
3. Hard work
Fans are like the Encouragement factor that helps an artists nurture their talent/expertise.
Hi Chinmayi, I have been reading your blog for a while now. I just have one question, here again in the comment section I only see positive comments more than negative. Now I'm forced to believe that your publishing only the good reviews about you? I may be wrong also here. After all, we are humans and we'd loved to be talked good about us right? Isn't the truth???
Omg chinmayi, please don't even mention them!! I am amazed how you are dealing with those bad comments... if i were in your place, i would have given up on blogging long ago. But you are strong. Above all, explaining why you are not publishing those comments - don't know what to say. Your patience is incredible. Keep going girl!
Hi Chinmayi,
My opinion, an artiste gets recognised because of his/her talent. Becomes popular because of their talent first and fans next. Prospers because of his/her fans first and talent next. This is because at the time of prosperity, an artiste has established / proved his/her talent. So, ppl / fans now start looking at the kind of person in the artiste also (sometimes). :)
An artist comes to light because of his talent. Thats no doubt. The fans recognize this talent and that in return helps the artist prosper. But there comes a time when the growth in talent might not necessarily translate into attracting that certain fan following (the average fan) as that fan might not have reached that level of understanding towards the growth in artistry. Thats when I think the artist compromises (that is only if the artist feels that fan following is key)and starts to please. A die hard fan on the other hand would not care anythign and love the artist no matter what. ARR is a good example, he does what he wants to, some people get his vision and some don't...but few years later they catch up...
Ramanthan: Definitely not. If one have no talent where does the question of fan fare even come? Its not like the chicken/egg first.
Malavika: I am sure someone like you would have come back to read my comment. Deleting them now since it is unnecessary otherwise. I'd rather let this be a clean space. And a positive space.
Need clarification.
Deleting abusive comments is fine, we want to have healthy discussion in our blog spaces. But are you deleting negative reviews and criticisms? If yes, then I have been fooled by your idealistic (and at times childish) rants. This blog has lost its innocence.

G’Day,
Subjectively, you have 3 koschin, exist, prosper & fans. Its all relative & relavance.
To exist, you should be something, that something is abundance of talent you possess, this abundance is not bench marked or emulated, it is free spirited to your uniqueness.
Prosper is how you make yourself relevant, with your uniqueness you possess in relevance to time.
Fans are like railway track, with parallel appreciation & admiration, could be source of inspiration.
Fans don't exists without you & likewise you don't exist without them, its relative.
Enjoy your Day
Gopi
Just Commented!!!
it seems like simple but while thinking about bit complex...
obvious that artist exist because of talent. but does all talented artists has huge fan base? (otherwise talent is not directly proportional to fan base or vise versa :D )
apart from talent, fan base there is some other factor which plays critial role in survival ;)
An artist not yet established or accepted will have no fanfare, but he still is an artist invisible.
The Question here would relate more better to an established artist. According to me 'constant or continuous improvement' or being creative, innovative, thinking out of the box every time would let him/her prosper.I can't stop myself from providing the example from the rise of the incredible mozart ARR here.
Rahman sir has elevated the taste's of music fans opening the gates of world music into the homes of every indian. So it can also be said
that an artist who could take his fan's to the next level, give them a totally different experience that would enlighten or educate them would eventually prosper.
I would say it's all about 'Exceeding Expectations'. Knowing the 'expectations' is the biggest challenge and exceeding them is
even bigger.
Artiste, by this qualification, is talented and has expertise. Artiste exists because of the ability and ease of connecting to the fans. Though the actual mode of connecting to the fan may vary based on the art itself, it is this ability that makes one, an artiste.
Shankar: I am not sure how you have perceived this blog. And I am not sure if I am should/expected to apologize if you think this blog has lost whatever it was this space was perceived to be.
However as a lot of people say, it's probably best to have an agency handle my tweets/blog only as a marketing tool. Because at no point in time does a non-popular person, including you, give the benefit of doubt to someone like me.
And as for deleting negative comments, if the 'negative' comment is poisonous/abusive, which is how they have been + anonymous, I don't see why I should publish it here, as it is not asking for discussion or clarification. it will be like positing an hour-length video of a barking dog. Thats all.
Chinmayi good to know that your being very reciprocating to ur fans response. But again why can't you see negative comments as the other side of the coin and just believe in your talent, just your talent. If you want to keep your blog clean from negative/abusive comments which merely means you fear criticism and failure in life! You just can't take criticism which is not favorable to you. Thanks for your time.
Malavika 'Student': I presume you didnt read my response. The only negative comments I guess 'i want to f*** you' 'you should be dead' 'your mother should die' now since you have seen this I dont think I need to see the different types of f words on this blog and publish comments of people who have neither manners nor good upbringing.
And as for criticism and taking it, I know what I m made of :) And you, the reader is a stranger and dont know me personally. Anyway thanks for your judgment.
To Whomever it may concern.
Bad reviews and Obnoxious comments are two different things.
Bad reviews are the other side of the coin and Obnoxious comments are not at all on the coin for god sake.
Bad reviews , or reviews for that matter pertain to a work of art.
But Obnoxious comments on the other hand are offensive and abusive ones, mostly given out by
people who might be drug addicts, porn addicts, child abusers or who live a failed life.
They would not know about art or an artist. Why should some one publish such comments on a blog?
Yo duds......
I have been following chinmayi's blog for quite a while...... She does approve comments that connote constructive criticism.
Im defending nobody but imagine this!
@malavika student: say i judge u frm ur comments, and i say something bad about you (which is of no use whatsoever in improving yourself) and the comment has an audience including kids dreaming to make it as big as chinmayi what would you do and why?
Talent helps to get the fans ,fans helps to survive in the industry for long time.those who improves their talent continuously will get increase in their fan number.talent does not depends on the fan number but the fan number depends on the talent.
Surely Talent first and later on with fans support &God's blessings....
Malavika: Rephrase. Many but not everyone has some talent or a special gift. And yes few get recognised. I am grateful to God for that.
Apparently you still fail to understand my intention and are misquoting me in your comment to Kutty. Well, I am quite used to that. People don't understand what I am saying and I repeat. I have NOTHING against the layman but the Pseudo who is actually a layman but pretends to be a critic based on hardly baked knowledge.
Talent is not a waste. Talent is never a waste and whenever I sing I dedicate it to God. Good comments, abusive comments, or bad comments, miscomprehensions are all what He gives to me. Which I take. Nothing is dedicated to any man and I exist the way I do because of God's grace and divine intentions that work through men. I owe my life to my mom alone. And remain eternally grateful to all the composers who have been kind to me. everyone else is incidental. They dont last a lifetime.
Chinmayi, I would say stop responding to Malavika. It is never ending :-)
I don't mind if you don't publish my comment. If you did she might start on me...ha ha...
good luck. way to go !!!
Artists are artists because of their talents and hardwork. With those 2, they earn the luck they sometimes get.
Artist's performance brings in the fans. after that, its symbiotic but if the talent/expertise is not utilized by the artist later on, they will lose their fans.
Thanks for the responses anyone. And I guess of all the comments I agree most with Manivannan's comment. Makes sense to me. For an artiste, retaining his fans would also mean maintaining his expertise/talent in top shape or/and innovation
Artists, as in any profession come in different grades..The highest grade would be similar to mummoortigal/oviyar silpi/bharathiyar, who do it for the love of it, and people flock to it automatically.

A late reply, however I have some questions to ask you too.
In general, I largely believe that an artiste prospers because of his/ her talent/ expertise.
But off late, I see that success is largely dependent on gaining a good fan base.
Perspective 1: Take reality shows; typical singing competitions. The winner in the last round is adjudged based on audience post. Sometimes, it looks so silly that the knowledgeable judges who have been so far making decisions about who to keep and who to send out, become, sort of, dummies at the last round - they cannot select the winner. And the singer who sings the most popular songs, who appeals to the mass, gets the maximum votes (one could argue that 'marketing' is also an expertise of the artiste!). So what good is the core talent?
Perspective 2: The other aspect, esp. of today's music world is the variety. Almost every song today is sung by new artistes (I'm talking specifically of film songs; every other genre of music in India is practically non existent!). They disappear after a few songs. If SPB or Janaki sung probably almost every other song 10-15 years back, today a singer hardly gets a chance to create a track. Or for that matter, create a fan base (I would count you as one of the lucky ones!). So what good is talent?
(We all know that most of us think that these singers get to sit as judges on various reality shows!)
So, as a person from this world, you should have better, knowledgeable answer to the questions you have posed.
It is talent, courage to try and fans all will dictate the prosperity of a career. "Talent is not enough" book summarizes this nicely for a professional. I have seen rare talent in both movies and got an opportunity to listen to some of them in carnatic music or in the career. Some of the talented didn't get the recognition they deserve because the people who could were insignificant making the their reach/longevity cut short.
