July 22?

Earthquake and Tsunami apparently is "predicted" to happen in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Philippines, New Zealand, Japan and a couple of other countries.
And the thing is I was told I am supposed to speak about this on radio.
Now I cannot do that unless it is verified by officials.

Are there Tsunami / Earthquake warning offices/departments?

Let me know

apparently there are met depts and then the earthquake and tsuname warning centers...no such announcement is made in any of those sites...one of those predictions of people. It'd be wise to ignore and not create unnecessary panic through a media reaching out to lot of people. It will be highly irresponsible. Appreciate your sensitivity.

The email seems to be a hoax. Sources say that there is no scientific evidence behind the theory that solar eclipses trigger earthquakes.
I do not find any messages on this on the Indian Meteorological Institute / Institute of Oceanography websites.

July 22 2009 is a day of total solar eclipse and will be visible across south east asia. This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until June 13, 2132.
Now there is an unconfirmed, unverified email, that is outrageous content stating this day there will be a tsunami and will hit singapore, japan etc. There is no confirmation from early warning systems for tsunami research centers or from earthquake tracking centers.
It is a simple email that is being fast circulated.

I also found the above link, a guy who is talking about a theory....just a theory

it would not be nice to panic the people...maybe a sort of mild warning may do a good

Hi Chanmayi,

Been following your blog regularly. You're doing a great job :)

This is a hoax. I got this as a mail forward and did some online digging. Know what? This was initially floated by a GAME DEVELOPER!! He just did some rough calculations and GUESSED this might happen. This is the killer - he didn't even do some mathematical modeling or simulation to see if it might happen. He simply floated a theory, on a games development website!! Check this out - http://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/15946. I frankly am VERY leery of this.

Snopes is a very reputed rumour-hunting group, and was featured (on the cover??) of Reader's Digest recently. Check out their article quashing this - http://www.snopes.com/science/tsunami.asp. I trust them more than the rumour..

If you can, please don't mention this on the radio. If you have to, then at least mention that quite a few have refuted this.. let's not spread panic :)

Hi Chinmayi,
I did a bit of research on this as soon as I got the email forward. Here you go with my finding,
a) the original blog post was by a software simulator designer in Japan, predicting only in the japanese areas....moreover it was a prediction from some obscure model, rather than anything official...

Once this news caught attention, the news converted to a India / SriLanka tsunami, which is not seconded by the NASA tsunami alert centre, nor the asian tsunami belt region website...

so I think it was intended with a concern for Japan, but got diverted to all-over asia...

please tread with caution with this news!
