"You cannot have the cake and eat it too". I can understand what it conveys. Now who came up with line especially with a cake in it? Why would anyone go through the process of baking a cake and just have it and watch it rot? I love pastries and when I am around, if there is cake at my place, it will be like now you see it and then you won't.

Isn't a cake meant to be eaten? Ah well. I wish I can go to Taj Cake shop now. Any suggestions for where one can get the best pastries?

I remember someone saying this to me a while back and when I asked her to explain it...this is what she said: If u were to raise a cow in the house, you will not eat it, since it provides you with milk and also is considered sacred." Now, the analogy sits well for a cow, but not for a cake right?

I wish I could say, where to go for a cake, but sadly no.

Me a part time visitor to ur blog and of course now u have really tempted me to respond :). Luv desserts (especially chocolate - courtesy my better half). Never had the opportunity to experiment while working in chennai but am sure u'll get lot of suggestions.

So here u go, if you happen to be in DC, do try the "Apple Jalebi with Orange Cardamom Ice cream" @ Rasika. (www.rasikarestaurant.com). BTW I am not affiliated to the place in any way :). Just a fan.

if you like Chocolate, try "Sacher Torte" at La Madeleine (its a chain).

If u happen to be in Vegas, try the buffet @ Paris. U'll find all kinds of pastries.

Keep posting the good ones you find.

Cake Walk-across Alsa Mall, Egmore. The best pastries I've had in my life! Why do pastries suck big time in the US and UK?

I am in love with the truffle cake at Parafait 3 in Velachery. Simply divine and suprisingly not so expensive. The other stuff are also good there

As time goes by and we age, we realize that cakes and pastries are meant to be seen but not eaten.

Sweet Chariot is good in Bangalore. I saw a branch in Chennai on the road that connects Nungambakkam High Road (Ganpat Hotel/ Adyar Ananda Bhavan) to Sterling Road. See this link for contact info.

If you get a chance try it out. I am not sure if this would match Taj stuff though :-(

Help needed:

It might be irrelevent to the topic.Sorry for that.

One of my cousin wants to learn hindustani vocal. She is in a village. But she is well educated. She is finding hard to find a good teacher. Do you know anyone who teaches through internet(mumbai, north india, from anywhere)? Could you pls. help me out on this?
People in village are really unfortunate fellows. They don't get access to many heavenly art and exposure people get in city.

Thanks in advance,

Please try Sweet Chariot next to Marry Brown at Lakhani Plaza. I used to see TD, Bhanupriya, Kushboo frequents there. Pineapple pastry is the best.

Of course, all the pastries at McRennett (near Greams Road & Lloyds Road) seems to be fine and yummy.

If you don't mind local stuff (low cost), I have had nice puffs, and strawberry cake in Lloyds road, opp Gee Gee Springs.

you should try "sweet chariot" in Bangalore. its a chain within bangalore . has amazingly soft pastries and dessert-cakes.

Thanks everyone.
I dont like the pastries at Coffee Day, But yes cake walk is by far the best, not close to the Taj Cake shop though
I think the GRT one is also below par. But then all that is a matter of perception. Sweet Chariot is OK. Shall try Sweet chariot in Bangalore. As for the ones abroad, I shall wait for the right time :)
Sarada: My mom does. Do mail me. But conditions apply.

I think the idiom is more like an antithesis of 'alla alla korayadhadhu'....so if you have the cake eventually there is going to no more cake left and you should know how to deal with it when you choose to eat the cake now !

Whenever I hear that line, I only relate it with all the diabetics in the world!

Hey Chinmayi,

Hope u r doing good. This is not related to the subject u r talkin abt rite now. I really felt i have to do something about this. What happened was :-
Last saturday, 23rd of May, my fiance and myself had gone to nungambakkam pizza hut.As u must be knowing , it is located in a building complex where there are many other outlets and offices. We went in a two wheeler and i got down at the entrance and my fiance searched for a parking space. The watchman, who was drunk ( the time was 11 o clk) didnt allow us to enter the building complex saying that some work is going on and we cannot park inside. So my fiance took a U turn n both of us were standing at the entrance not knowing where to park. Then suddenly a guy emerges out of nowhere and he said we can park our vehicle in a particular place where they said some work was going on. So we parked the vehicle at that place and started walkin towards pizza hut.. The guy other than the watchman came running after us and told we need to give him Rs 10 for parking there. As u wud be knowing, we need not pay for parking if we dine at pizza hut. I was startled and i told my fiance that we can go somewhere cos i was not ready to pay them. He said we will see to that after we eat. U wont blive chinmayi, al the time we were eating, my eyes were fixed on the bike cos i wasnt sure if twas safe. Then after eating, we walked to the parkin lot and the watchman and the other guy were standing. I got irritated. My fiance went to take the bike and i walked towars the entrance cos i don want to hear wat words he myt use jus for Rs 10. As my fiance maneuvered the bike towards the entrance, the watchman and the other guy came behind for money. My fiance refused to give him. he said its not a paid parking lot and so we cannot give money. U dunno wat words he used. I really felt bad. Very very not parlimentary words about me and us together and that next tym if we come, he will make it a point not to let us inside the building. Who the hell is he to let us inside or to prohibit us into the building? So i guess he will allow even a terrorist if he is paid 10 rupees...

I am 24 years old and have voted thrice in my life. I love my country and my city. Do i deserve this? The irony is that a police man was watching the whole scene and he didn budge . I am damn sure he is not going to let us park inside next tym.Thats not my botheration. But why should i listen to some crazy talks jus because i dont wanna bribe in broad daylight. I want u to take up this on your show chinmayi. I am hurt big time. I am not telling this for self pity, but i am a heart patient and cant stand in the sun for long tym. Why shud i stand in the sun jus because i dont wanna bribe a drunkard security? ?WHY SHOULD I PAY MONEY IN A FREE PARKING LOT? WHY SHOULD I BRIBE?
I should say that these people are really beggars in uniform.

This might be a small petty issue happening in some corner of the world... but such small issues change the way u feel about your country...
What can i do to him?? i really wanna break the hand that takes bribe...But i cant... i really dunno wat to do... so upset

It is the age old notion that you can't have a cake and eat it too. Life

is like a box of cake. Now you have it, now it's gone! But don't worry,

all you have to do is go to the cake shop and get another one. As far as

having the cake goes, when I'm having the cake, i'm eating it. The

saying should've technially been, you cannot retain the cake in its

entirety, and perform the act of eating it, within the same time frame.

Hence whoever said the quote in question, was way off mark, and was

probably having cake while he said it. It is the birthright of every

being in this world to have all the cake they want and I shall strive incessantly for the upliftment of this cause! Jai Hind!

it's amazing how many people misinterpret this particular saying: Wanting to have a cake and eat it too means this:
The dilemma of wanting to keep something and the desire to keep it for later. So, what it means here is that "If you eat the cake, it is not available for later; If you keep it for later, it is not available for now. So, choices involve such dilemma in life.". "Later" here doesnt mean orever, it just means maybe a few minutes later in the context of the cake. In the context of life choices, it could mean that choosing to eat now means you cannot have another desire happen few years down the line, choosing to have it now could mean you'll have the desire filled few yearsd own the line but you have to make sacrifices now. Phew!

The best i would say are the cakes from Hot Breads:)
