Djakarta :)

Peaceful. Calm. Almost serene I would say. Wonderful hosts and wonderful food at their home. Mom has been here for 3 days and she has been learning the language with gusto.
Somehow I really wonder if the seats in aircrafts are designed for comfort at all. But then I can be weird. That's not the point anyway. We went to this place called Taman Mini which is Indonesia in miniature. Lovely concept. Reminded me of Dakshinachitra in a few ways because of the way they have replicated the houses that are found all over Indonesia in one place. Took enough and more pictures. And then there was this miniature monkey which rode its own mini scooter, which is what I would like to call that contraption. But it was adorable. The weather here was cloudy when we landed and it has been raining. Then there was the elaneer we had here. Definitely one of the biggest that I have seen and tasted. I also saw this interesting lake where they have recreated the map of Indonesia, its Islands et al. I could not but help compare that with the kind of wealth of resources that we have in India so much can be done but perhaps the bureaucracy just won't allow that. There were groups of dancers that were practicing the traditional dances. Indonesia seems to celebrate the Geetopadesha and the Ramayana quite a lot. A lot more exploring to do but now its time to get to work and decide on the show tomorrow.

Hello Chinmayi
Naresh Iyer and you made every one literally dance to your tunes today at the Gedung Kesenian, Jakarta! Simply wonderful performance. I particularly enjoyed your rendering of "Singaravelane Deva". What a song! Could we ever get such classical gems? You are endowed with excellent voice - somewhere between the lovely voice of the yesteryear M.S. Rajeswari and P. Suseela's. Though you seem to be quite adept in singing 'kuthu pattus' also, I believe it is melody that best suits you. I was looking forward to your singing any of 1960s P. Suseela's memorable songs - anyway, you took up the most difficult composition of S. Janaki's from Konjum Salangai and rendered full justice. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the whole song; I could picturize the scene beautifully enacted by the lovely Savithri and the Kadhal Mannan Gemini Ganesan. I read long back that it was not Karukkurichi that followed Janaki in the song. Janaki sang to the pre-recorded Nagaswaram piece by Karukkurichi Arunachalam. Today's whole performance was really more like a family wedding get together, thanks to you and the engergetic and talented Naresh Iyer. What a range Naresh can touch - an electrifying presence! Jakarta kids who danced on the stage today would never forget their experience in their life time. Thanks also to our dear Seshadris who made your visit possible. By the way, Djakarta was the old spelling for this city - Many years back, the city had been rechristened as Jakarta. ]

Continuing my previous post, I wonder when would this 'kuthu pattu' fad will fade away! Not a word in these songs can be heard, perhaps even if heard, I guess that it would be rubbish to the core.

Just to share with you.

Hi chinmayi,

just found a quote you'd like

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
Nelson Mandela "

And you know Indonesia even a declared Islamic country, respects Sanskrit, calls its international Airline as "Garuda" and adores Ramayana.
What a contrast are we in in Rama's motherland and even though in "Secular" country, we talk about demolishing Ram Setu and don't promote Sanskrit.
I believe that, even for the one who is not a Hindu , these are treasures of our land, surely worthy of being cherished, and promoted.

Chinmayi,

I was watching a promo of Asal movie, and i could clearly spot your dubbing for Sameera. I doubt if i can concentrate on what that character speaks in the movie. Your voice is so evident unfortunately.
