I forgot to mention something and instead of inserting it in the previous post, I decided do write anew. Dubbing for Theeradha Vilayaattu Pillai and Vinnaithaandi... happened at the same time and the hero's name in both movies is Karthik. I was also dubbing for the Telugu versions of both movies and incidentally I had probably said the name Karthik a million times. One of those days I had a recording in the night and had to walk into the next day, I started calling random people and my mother also, with the name Karthik.. got up in the morning and said absent mindedly "Karthik... I want coffee" to Amma.. If I had mentioned any other name, she would have been happier thinking and had the feeble hope that I had finally found someone, but since she knew that was the name of the hero in two movies, at the same time, she new better. The number of times I have said Karthik or even the name Gautham in the movies I have dubbed is phenomenal. Karthik ... Gautham.. Gautham... Karthik.. There was a rare Shakthi or a Ravi here and there. Someone once told me that naming the hero and heroine is a big issue for several people and hence they usually just pick something ... like Prem or Rahul in Hindi movies.. they cited this example. I forget who told me this.. Anyway that is that.

I am sure Shahrukh has patented Raj :)....my husband Ashok says that its very unfair that the bad guy always ends up being called Ashok in many tamil movies and that too, noone says it right most of the time (its asog or asok...) !

Anuradha said...

Oh man, that was one of the very few things I din't like about this movie. The hero's name. Karthik is a veryyyyyyyyyy common name and I would want directors to chose something apart from the regular ones.

Hi Chinmayi,

Watched both the movies TVP and VTV.

VTV in particular,

The dialogue delivery in all the three languages English, Tamil and Malayalam give an impression it is done by a native speaker.

Also, your voice very much suits the contemporary matured girl.

Congrads Chinmayi, a great job once again.

Sorry to divert attention, but @SG, if he will feel better, remind your husband that there was a "Ashok (Vishwanath)" brilliantly played by a once-upon-a-time-gorgeous Karthik in Agni Natchatram :-) I think that should do to make up for all the "villians" ;-)

I sincerely believe that is an issue. Naming a person. In movies, my view is that, a hero's name should be simple. The guy next door kind of a simple name.. karthik- works everytime!

But, for me, name should be real simple.. I ve too much trouble with my name! For some strange reason, no one bothers to say my name right! "Maa-than-gi".. is that soooo complex? "madanki","mathaaangii","mathaji","mathangini","maaadangeee"- these are some of the various versions of my poor name! The worst one was "Mandakini"!

My dad had chosen lots of names for me, when they planning to name me.. some of them were gita, sangeetha (coz dad is obsessed with both music and bhagvad gita), gauri etc. Matangi was in it too.. Mom thought this would be unique! Can't blame her.. Her name suffers the same plight as mine! Pushkala, always ends up being pushpakala or bushkalaa.. like mother-like daughter! ;-)

good one on that mom's hoping part! :-D

I hit upon your blogsite by chance when I was trying to get more info about the song "Dil Gira Kahin Par Daffatan" and I must say am quite surprised/amused to see an artist having a blog site. i guess have never imagined communicating with an artist directly. Anyway, i must say all songs in D-6 are wonderful, but this one is my favorite! KUDOS for singing this and all the very best!! ....

to Vijay:
Karthik enra per nalla than irukkalam but mom knows the fact that I was growing tired with the repeating of that name. We had a lot of good laugh on Gowtham and Karthik

nandhini said...

Yeah, names get so repeated in movies. Karthik, Shiva, Priya, Nandhini(my name) :)

I wish Gautham Menon had chosen a different name for Simbu's character. He came up with good character names in Khakha Khakha : Anbuchelvan, Maya, Ilamaran,,,.

@Directors : come up with good, non-repetitive names. :)

I love your dubbing, your voice has some magic.. awesome...
I heard your voice first time while watching surya s/o krishnan. at that time i thought sameera reddy herself had dubbed her voice.

But when later i watched ye maaya chesave i found the same voice to samantha also.. i did googling and found that its you...

i don't know who you are earlier but now i became a fan of you :)

I have recently noticed this in Ajith's movies. His character names will be either Jeeva or Shiva. That too Jeevanandham...

Hi Chinmaye, I din't know the voice over was yours for a few of the films until I read about that in your blog. I believe thats the success one can get as a dubbing artist :-) Keep it up!

By the way, one small suggestion. The text font in your blog is not so reader friendly; probably due to too less vertical spacing (i.e., line-height is less). It would be easier to read if that is fixed.

Thanks!

Saw VTV over the weekend.. Nice expressive voice given by you for Trisha.. Such a big difference in your voice between singing a song like 'Anbil avan' and the soft but matured voice for Trisha..

nalla velai.. Mall la engayavadhu poi Karthik nnu yaaraiyum koopidalaiye..

TamilPonnu said...

A gal pal of mine watched a clip of VTV and she said that Trisha's voice was super attractive.. I mean it was the first thing that she/I noticed which stuck out for both of us. She was surprised to hear that it was your voice..I'm not sure if you know this..(lol), but your voice is pretty damn good! I like the fact that you are venturing out to do other things, not sure if that's the norm in the industry, but ahmmm more power to you..

I was just telling my brother about the same thing today - how, when i watched vtv, i suddenly thot of tvp and when u said gautham in kanden kadhalai u reminded me of bhoomika from jillinu..Nice job. The malayalam sounded very interesting to me!

Aishwarya said...

Haha! It's funny - I was just telling my brother today about how you saying Karthik in VTV reminded me of TVP (watched that barely a few days ago), and how tamannah saying Gautham in Kanden Kadhalai reminded me of Bhoomika saying that in Jillinu oru Kadhal! Nice job with the dubbing (you're one of the very few with a good accent and not monotonous). Well done with the malayalam part as well!

Happaaaaa.... i came to the topic of calling karthik...karthik...All because of Mr Many rathnam . he gave this name to the character in ALAIPAYUTHEY. This character has some influence from the role of actor karthik in MOUNA RAAGAM. And no wonder simbu is a big fan of that movie alaipayuthey . Gautham vasudev menon ,an engineer and i guess he has worked with Mr.Mani. And all the more CHINMAYEE voice was heard by evry1 for the first tym in his movie .
finally i finish my mokkai by saying that "u still have a lot of karthiks to pronounce ...

In "Mannipaaya" - Vinnai thaandi varuvaaya song ARR has sung the below lines,

kaatrile aadum kakidham naan
neethaan ennai kaditham aakkinaai
anbil thodangi anbil mudikkiren
en kalangarai vilakkamey

I wanted to know the exact meaning of the line "anbil thodangi anbil
mudikkiren". Since you have worked in that VTV movie, also in one of
posts you have written that thaamarai has become very close to you.
Can you please help me out to understand the exact context of this line.

Reason: Many tamil movies which had hero's name as Karthik were/are hit.

To name a few:

Alaipauthey,Unnale Unnale,Rhythm,Vinnai thaandi varuvaaya

Karthik means courage and happiness, this sentiment have touched bollywood too "Karthik Calling Karthik". Expect few more movies with Karthik name in future.

I like the way you pronounce "Karthik".
