Please Suggest

Two questions
1. A friend of ours wants to buy a mid segment car which she wants to keep for at least 10 - 15 years. She is not going to be changing her car with the season. I guess that brings us to wheels that dont need to be driven to the mechanic that often, and a company that will be around for that long, so that spares and the like will be available. A lot of people have been suggesting the Hyundai Verna, one because the company has set up shop in Chennai, and is reportedly highly fuel efficient. I happened to tell her about how people have helped me on my blog, with regard to buying things. So would be great if you could chip in your thoughts on this, and....

2. Going on HDTVs, which would be the best to buy? The preference on her side are the wall mountable ones. So the question is
Projection TV - what is it all about
LCD or Plasma? Which one for either option?

She has seen the LG TV which has an inbuilt memory, and can record. And there is the split screen option I hear, what ever that may be.
And of course there is the wide range in Samsung. She does not seem that kicked about Sony, Philips or Panasonic. I am not sure on whether she has seen Sharp.

Confused consumers.

Suggestions would be highly appreciated. TIA.

giving us any problem ! And watching movies & tv shows have realli been made more theatre like ! But if she wants to get a plasma tv , she def has to take loads of care of it ! If she wants to get a wall mounted tv , She has to make sure she doesnt hang anything on top of it ! Cos it can lead to some very trecherous disasters ! Seen incidents like tt too many times !
Hope my info helped u & ur friend ! Take care !

I can tell about TVs. Buying TV these days is not as easy as it was in those days where you had 2 simple options - Black & White or Color. Since now, you asked about those 3 latest kinds, they come up in this order - Projection, Plasma and LCD in terms of generation. LCD is the future and hence it is the way to go if you ask me. LCD saves a lot of space by being very slim and it has lesser environmently unfriendly components than the others. It has the least amount of lead in it. Also, LCD provides you the true experience of high definition. You should go for an LCD tv that can give a HD resolution of atleast 720P while it is also ok to go for 1080P (Called full HD) as a future proof. This is very important coz they sell TVs with other resolutions like 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The i stands for interlaced and p for progressive. The choice is "p" , always go for P and higher res number , gives the best clarity. So choose between 720p, 1080i or 1080p depending on the budget. There are other factors that come in for LCD tv. Contrast ratio which is spelled as 800:1 or 1000:1 or any number for that matter. The choice should be a greater number. This number will make sure that your picture can crisply show colors and color difference which is very important in enjoying HD. Go for a high number, atleast 800:1, more is better. Another number is response time. This is the factor of speed at which the moving images can be displayed on screen. So this must be as fast as it can so that you shouldn't see any flickr. The number is usually like 10 milliseconds, 8 ms or 4 ms. This number should be as small as possible. Also, see if the TV has inbuilt Tuner in it. Some TVs are advertised as HDTV monitor. They dont have TV tuners in it and you will have to buy them separately. It is always good and easy if you buy the TV with the tuner. It was not a question for analog TV but it is an option to leave out on HDTVs as there are options of set top boxes with Cable TV. This is not a big deal but something additional to consider. Last, but not least is the video input - The best form of input is HDMI. It provides the finest quality of video input from your DVD/Blu Ray/ HD DVD player. The second best is Component video ( where you have 3 componenet connections for 3 colors). The third is S-video. While you may definitely have component and s-video, not all TVs have HDMI. So it is good to find a TV with HDMI to enjoy the greatest picture quality while playing Blu ray or HD DVD. So to sum up look for these 5 things -

Resolution, Contrast ratio, Response time, TV Tuner, Video input

Brand suggestions - Personally I have researched these brands and I liked them - Sony ( a little bit pricey but the Bravia model is just very juicy. He is straightway the leader in quality), Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Vizio, Polaroid. I am not sure if you get all these brands in India but this is what we usually see here in US. If you look at Sony Bravia you may fall in love with it, so be sure to check out other brands first for some reality check and then come back to sony.

Hi Chinmayi,

You are rocking in Super Singer Junior. Nice improvement from the first season.

Ok, about Plasma TV. I have written an article about it in my blog here

Ask your friend to go thru it. It may be helpful.

Car: Ask your friend to change the car once every few years :). I have a hyundai and thinking of buying wagonR with gas(LPG). If your friend really wants to keep the car for 10-15 years, suggest, Ambassador. :)

TV: Rear projection tvs are not wall mountable and have lesser viewing angle. I mean, you have to sit exactly at some specific angles to get the best quality of the picture.

Plasmas have lesser life time than LCDs. Plasmas tvs get heated more. I also heard that you have to refill xeon gas after many years.

LCD, at this time is the best option. I have a 32 inch lcd and working great. If you have a lot of money, buy bravia from Sony. All the other brands are I think the same!!

Cheers,
Saravanan.

Ask you friend to try the new to be released at Chennai Chevorlet's SPARK.
The brand name is one thing you can depend on. The pricing is between 3 - 3.5 Lacs. FOr more info on this chech out www.chevyspark.in or www.chevorlet.co.in

As for T.V it has to match your dreams and your interior. Plasma is a good bet.

frankly, i have got little clue on technicalities of cars and simply no clue on TV... but, like a common man I too have preferences, here they are.

I would suggest Honda City (or the sexy Civic)... it has the brand name and has been tried and tested too. the rest of the new cars are yet to certified as long lasting. But, i liked that ambassador suggestion!! thats the only car that can come for 15yrs!! :-)

2. TV... Sorry, Chinz, I dont wanna give any false impression.. i have no clue about TV.

Just let us know what she finally picked.

i guess Maruti Alto - is the best in the deal - as far as i know !

2. HDTV is of no use in India for atleast next few years as our signals are not High definition ... and it takes lot of time to get the signals into high definition ... or atleast to feel its use !

but if at all you want only HDTV - then - It should be Sony or Samsung !coz these 2 guys have the best technology

and also - i dont think there are variety of HDTV models in India - primarily because of no HD Signals... you will find max of one or 2 models in India -

She could go for a LCD TV - Sony Bravia (costly - still its Sony) Sony has the habit if changing one small capacitor in the Tv - call it a new technology and increase the price .. their models keep changing..
if you are looking for stable ones ..go for Onida or Samsung !

and make sure you go for 29" and above - with a 5:1 surround from Mercury or Intex (close to Rs3500)-

coz HDTV models (in India) do not offer good sound output !

Hi
I just love the Verna I bought for my parents. The crdi version is awesome in both power and fuel efficiency. Although it is not a great international brand, for Indian roads they are great.
For the TVs, the LCDs are great in having higher viewing angle, than the plasma which is bound to have incidents. But one thing that I'd like you/friend to take a look at is the new DLP - digital light projection, tht combines digitizing the projection tech. It alleviates the viewing angle problem that was inherent with projection tvs, while it is cheaper than LCD, and awesome.. We have a 61 inch from Samsumg, greatest buy of mine ever..
And honeybee, Chevy is nt a brand name that you can depend on.. it is one of the least dependables in USA. Ask anyone who has researched about buying cars in USA and they would accept my fact.. Plz.. no chevy or Ford..

about TVs - Dinesh has covered all the things you should look for in the LCD. I'm with him for Sony Bravia and they do cost a lot of money? Rs50,000?? anyhow, if u plan to buy plasma please know about the screen burning issues with it. Plasma TVs are subject to screen burn. which means u can't enjoy using game consoles in higher resolution. but i heard mordern plasma screen have less suffered from these issues. both lcd and plasma's has their plus and minuses. from my limited knowledge, plasmas has great viewing angles but comes with issues such as burn in, screen life etc.

LCD's are better for HD and on the other hand plasmas make SD images look better as there not quite as sharp. LCD's dont suffer burn in but blacks appear as more of a grey but are pixel purfect only when you are offering it sharper images in HD but really crappy from SD sources.

That's all i can think of now. HTH

The best ever car produced to drive, according to many European car pundits, is BMW 3 series and the most reliable is Honda civic. I know I am not helpful here but mentioning this for other readers.

LCD vs Plasma: Both have more or less the same lifetime - longer than CRTs anyway - just long enough to watch one full soap from its beginning to the very last episode including possibly re-unions or sequels.

LCDs are more robust than Plasmas. You should be able throw objects, like Teddy bears but not stuffed with a table weight, gently on the LCD TV :-). But seriously LCDs may not survive the heat and the humidity of chennai over the period of the time. Colours might degrade. If you want to watch colourful adverts or songs, Plasma TV is the one you need.
Samsung is the best researched in the LCD world. Sony may have the reputation but Samsung years ahead with its LCDs (check out the contrast and response time). If your wants to place computer games then Samsung is for you; If she wants to watch cartoons and songs in slow motion then Sony is the best bet.
Panasonic has the widest range in Plasmas. Not many companies produce plasmas anyway. LG tries to come out with bigger screen with lot of technical features but their quality is far inferior to what Panasonic can offer.
HDTV is good if you want to watch DVDs via HDMI. Make sure the DVDs is not pirated, which may have poor resolution.

Well I have done my job in confusing you.

I HAVE A HYUNDAI VERNA WHICH I RECENTLY GOT. SEEMS TO BE TOO GOOD . NOT THAT I AM BIASED SINCE I OWN ONE . BUT I HAD BEEN DRIVING QUITE A LOT OF THESE CARS AND FOUND VERNA TO BE GOOD ENOUGH TO LAST LONGER AND ITS BEEN RUNNING TROUBLE FREE ( ALL CARS DO RUN TROUBLE FREE AT THE START I UNDERSTAND BUT IF THE CAR IS MAINTAINED WELL WITH REGULAR SERVICE AT AUTHORISED SERVICE POINTS ITS BOUND TO LATS LONGER ENOUGH. MY DAD OWNS A PREMIER PADMINI WHICH HE GOT IN 1990 HE STILL RUNS THE SAME OLD ONE TROUBLE FREE SINCE HE HAD MAINTAINED IT WELL) . SINCE HYUNDAI FACTORY IS ALSO SET UP IN CHENNAI GETTING SPARES FOR NEXT 15 YEARS WILL NOT BA A TROUBLE. IF U ASK ME I WOULD SUGGEST VERNA AS ONE HELL OF A CHOICE . THANK YA
