Bheema - Enadhuyire and etc.

That would be the next song. I have sung this song along with Sadhna Sargam and Sowmya Raoh and Nikhil Mathew, the Super Singer winner last year. He has had to wait for a year after the announcement of the results to get a break in the movies and I know for a fact that it has not been very easy even though an opportunity was promised with Harris Jeyaraj sir.
Only as long as talent hunts last, is it easy for the participants. And probably if you are a winner, a short time thereafter. Once the novelty fades, winner or not, everyone has to pave their own hard way through for opportunities. One thing, Nikhil has had his head on his shoulders, unlike, surprisingly, some contestants in the Super Singer Junior.
Nowadays the Airtel Super Singer Junior claims that professional singers have a few go-s at recording the song. He also claims that songs like Balleilaka have been achieved not by singers but only due to machines. I wonder what the parents are doing. Rather, the problem here is that the parents themselves claim that their children are way better than all the musicians in the industry put together. I am guessing he is surrounded by wrong advisers. Its surprising to see how quickly fame gets to the heads of children, and unfortunately their families as well, and they suddenly lose sight of the ground they stand on. As the SSJ progressed, I saw several kids develop audacity and attitude problems, not behaving properly with the crew, demanding to be treated as celebrities, and treating media like pith, when legends like Dr Balamuralikrishna, came and went unobtrusively. Today the demands of some of the children are sky-high. Also demanding to be paid in concerts as much as the top professional singers would be paid.
Talent is available aplently today, but talent is the raw material. Without studentship and intense learning on several stages sustenance of the art will not be there. Too much emphasis on concerts and making money and earning turns them to be child labourers. It may be an artistic area, but even then, a child worker is a child worker.
I feel like bringing in the parallel of diamonds here. Unless they are cut properly no brilliance can be achieved. And the cut is what makes the difference between a mere stone, an inferior diamond and a superior one. And somewhere down the line, the kids lose focus on learning and achieving more. And stagnate. Mom has seen several children with great talent, who showed great promise not come up as brilliant musicians as they were touted to become.
Talent hunts are great, to build confidence to be able to interact with stalwarts with whom we might otherwise interact as beginners, a teaser as to how to conduct yourself in front of popular media, to learn from our own flaws, because these give us the rare opportunities to watch ourselves in action, and with shows like SSJ, its like a music camp of learning as well.
Three days back, a senior journalist from the Indian Express wanted to me talk about life after Talent Hunts. Of course I could not speak to her at the time she called to give her my opinion, because I could not even make up my mind about whether I wanted to speak out about these children in particular to the popular media. I also had to consult mom on whether it was OK to talk about it. Of course by the time I called her back, two hours later, she was angry and I could not speak to her. This question is probably going to come back sooner or later.
There were times when it was hard for me to interact with the judges while the children were there on the same stage as I, because they would be constantly muttering under their breaths and commenting, rudely a lot of times as well. And I would lose track, stare at the children and go back to take once again. SSJ was more stressful than I thought it would be. The crew of course had a tougher time. A lot of people spoke about the 'drama' but probably the greatest was played by the children, and sometimes their parents. All that the crew, the judges and I could do was watch and be silent spectators. As they say, the show had to go on. And the children behaved well as soon as the cameras rolled. Of course some passed comments even while the cameras were on. Chitra amma gave a parting shot, that it is very important to continuously learn, respect the parents and elders and other musicians however small they are and to be humble more than anything else. Looks like it has fallen on deaf ears. And yes, in SSJ there are children who are well brought up. But only 3 or 4.
After seeing these talent hunts, I believe that bringing back the Gurukula system and home-schooling would probably be a better way to bring up children, instead of sending them to school, and them learning all the beeped out words before they are 10.

Babe The song was extraordinary.. It was really good.. It showed alot of sexiness yet had some sweet and coolness to it.. And Its true.. Ok.. Im a home study student myself... I used to go to school which where I learned more of the Beeped words than Science Facts.. Now That Im Home Studying , Im more focused and responsible for my actions.. I guess its more up to whether the parents take into control of what the children are exposed..

Being too Protective and Too Lenient has its Pros and Cons..!!

Anyways , Good Luck Babes !!

hey Chinmayi,

A small doubt......why three female singers? The promos dont look like Bheema has three female leads....then why three singers?

Also, yeah what you have said about some kids is true...have seen quite a few such fellas myself.... whenever I get to interact with such people with attitude problems, I always suggest them a "checkup Neckup!"

Hoping that few thousands of songs down the line, you will still be the same Chinmayi (Even though I do not know you personally, I can feel your simplicity through you blog here, and I am sure the rest of the commenters can vouch for that!!!!!)

Again,

Kudos!!!!

Shocking!

Thinking of legends like SPB Sir, who gives credits to all the instrument players, technicians, ... he even mentions about the behind the screen crew.

Looks like todays education system has failed when it comes to creating "continous learners".

Now a days, children are not only smart but also a bit arrogant. They think they know everything. Not every child is like that but still it is shocking to see the number of children that develop a superiority complex. All because they have talent which has not been fully developed, like u said,a cut diamond.

Also a lot of them treat elders like some diseased kind.Start a word of advice and they'll be gone long before u complete it.And yet we see seasoned people like SPB sir,Chitra mam,KJJ sir behave with utmost humility. You must see the way they correct mistakes. It is almost as if they are mortified to tell someone that they have made a mistake. All because that person should not be hurt.Ah!Talk of living examples of dedication, humility and sincerity. If these youngsters don't learn from them, then there is no way they will learn it anywhere else.

The parents also are to be a blamed for a bit for such situations. When ur child shows promise in a field, encourage him and when he succeeds, give him a pat on the back and say"Continue. There are greater things to achive".Just don't treat him like God,all because he won a competition.

To round off, youngsters of today have a lot less patience and expect "INSTANT SUCCESS".For Pete's sake, this is music, not Sunrise. That is also one of the reasons for hearing a lot of the beeped words. They also cannot accept failure in their stride. Its an attitude problem and as i said it does not apply to everybody.

Talent does count, but so does perseverance.Persevere with the right attitude or perish your dreams.

Thats pretty upsetting to hear that fame has gone to these kids heads.

You see examples like these every so often in USA where young celebrities earn lot of money and go crashing down hard.

But I think these kids will learn things quicker. The fame will fade in a few days, and as they grow up and become not easily recognizable, they will learn that it is harder to earn respect/fame and will work harder. They have age on their side to fall and get up. I am hopeful.

So curious to hear who the culprits are, but, I know you won't let it out in public.

Vignesh kind of spilled the beans in the episodes prior to the finals. Saicharan seemed to have his head on his shoulders. I thought krishnamoorthy was good, but after your post, I am not so sure anymore.

And don't give up on hosting another SSJ or SS. You were an integral part of the show and it showed in the episodes you weren't there. Hopefully, it was somewhat joyful for you.

Have to mention this, Usha Uthup was simply marvelous. I realized this even before the final episodes were aired when she made even the likes of chitra and you feel very comfortable and appreciated even both of you. Even the greats need appreciation to keep going.

Nice article about being humble and respectful which is lacking a lot in the society today. Everybody wants money and fame as quickly as possible. I don't find the same hospitality as before and people are acting more rude.

About the home-schooling system, I don't necessarily agree. Children need to get exposed to the outside world and for children, school is the best place for that. They learn right and wrong things, learn to notice the disparities of life and to also get a feel of team work. Rather, I'd say that parents should teach children moral values and to use the right judgement. There are a lot of decent and obedient children at school as well. It's just how they adapt to it and parents and teachers have a bug role to play in that.

Chitra said...

Hey Chinmayi: Oh wow..i thought they were just kids and have long way to go. If they can get daring with slightest of fame wonder what would happen if they become super popular.

Anonymous said...

absolutely, chinmayi! these days, it is just so hard to come across kids without airs, leave alone the adult accomplished few. sad! as long as they respect the art and not think they own it, they are treading the right path. it is quite depressing to see young minds at the peak of their ego.

I am surprised to read something like this about Krishnamurthy. During the show, I was under the impression that Vijaytv was going all out to show Krishnamuthy as the poor, well-mannered participant who should win. It was Vignesh and Saicharan who got a lot of bad talk. I have spoken with a few people who felt that seeing Krishnamurthy's father's last clip, they had tears and wanted Krishnamurthy to win. So I am surprised to see success getting into his head that fast. And I am not gonna be able to forget this shot at Bailelaka, since I have seen SPB perform it live.

I think parents make the child. Definitely, was upset by the behaviour of some of the parents. Sujatha sir, in one of his articles on Vikatan said, the difference between the parents in supersinger and on an american spelling contest, is that on that show, while the children become dull and parents console, here, the parents start crying.

Anyhow, lesson on parenting for sure.

Regarding talent, I think, now with the reality tv shows and television exposure, definitely there will be more and more average talent that come big, popularity-wise. After all, I think the world is basically going the way the West leads. So I would be surprised if those with less talent but good exposure and opportunities(luck) don't eclipse those that are more talented and hardworking.

Overall, the show was good in the sense that it showed some good singing by kids. I have seen some great ones before too, but they were just opportunities for kids to sing on stage without the financial tag attached. Now, I feel bad for those kids.

Too long, apologies.

And Gurukula will probably be reinvented. Tell me that you children don't do favours for their teachers/principals in school. Not only children, even parents, several of them run around for the teachers. You have not gone through the system yourself. In which case, you cannot comment too derogatively about it. but on the other hand when the super singer winner and runnerups came for coaching these kids there was so much humbleness in them...they didnt act like ego maniacs but they were more human and more respectful than anything...I think the kids have to learn from them...but above all form you!

real, good post. but i wasnt surprised when i saw some kids\parents on self-created, virtual high. But what about the Channel\Program itself, whish made some album type songs with the finalists, bringing their friends to opine on stage[will anyone say any bad\neutral??!!] and going to the kid's school\home[again praise from parents\mama\headmaster ect] ithellaam overu...that too for a kid's talent. And the final, big overu, whcih i cundt enjoy is, the standard reaction the kid made when he was announced as the winner

so, its least to blame kids, 1st elders shud change, right?

apart, its nice to hear Nikin Mathews is cool, ansd well, thats called maturity. kudos to him

hey chinmayi i think u r right....the gurukula system should be renewed and reinvented....
i can relate to its need so much because i started learning music only when i was 18 n its been two years since then.
i m managing my studies n music only because i want to and i think education is also important for me at this stage of my life....

i cannot forego one for the other

but had i known that learning music holds such importance for me i wud have stayed home to learn music all my life no matter what comes out of it....

thr's kid in my music class who's barely 11 has attitude n ego problems just because she is praised for she sings really well and all the praise is doing a lot of damage to her

i think when one gets into any form of art one should be selfless and always be ready to learn n absorb...any ego is an insult to the art itself...
one should respect the art first..

specially when u r into music....there is so much to learn that even a lifetime is not enough...

u know my biggest fear is that what if tomorrow when i start working i might have to face problems in managing work n music
lets c what life has for me
for now i m happy singing all the nice krithis n ata thala varnams!!!

i think both the children n their parents are to be balmed!!!
cheers

Silicon Sillu,

The Channel has to do such things in order to promete the program. It's all about marketing the next ssj. Can't blame them!

Cogito said...

Though not entirely surprising, the behind the scenes events are shocking to say the least.

While part of the blame lies with the parents who have failed to teach humbleness to these kids, the media and the audience have also hyped these shows a lot. The " shopping mall" galas, 5 star saloons were all uncalled for in a singing contest for chidren below the teen age. So rather than merely chastising the children, we as a society need to learn proper values.

Chinmayi Sripada /Chinmayee said...

cogito: I use this blog to voice out my concerns. Let me say that what I have written here is not even 1% of what the crew and I have faced with regard to attitude problems from the kids. I am not chastising anyone here, and I definitely do not have a say about what the producers plan for the show. Shopping mall, this or that. And yes we definitely need a society that teaches the proper values.. thats precisely my point.

Hi Chinmayi,
Greetings from Arlington, VA. USA.

I have become a huge fan of yours - you are wonderful and blessed with so many talents. Being an announcer and a stage performer I know how it is to be their on stage and I am really glad the way you did the Super singer Jr and adult version of it. Though I don’t have subscriptions to Viajy Tv - I have seen the recordings on You tube. The show is absolutely wonderful - congratts.

Being a comparer I know how importance it is to have good pronunciation and as we all know it has become a missing factor in our RJ/VJ community but when I hear you I am really happy and grateful to you for the efforts that you are making in balancing Tamil and English in announcing a show – great job Chinmayi -keep it up.
Yesterday I happened to see a recording on Kumudam's site - that had interviews of HarishRagavendra and your self. By listing to it - and based on my limited observation on you 2 it’s clear how simple you guys are compared to some upcoming artist.

I am sorry and sad to say this but when I view the video of the super singer jr. finalist - Krishnamoorthy I am really disappointed with the behavior/comments of his, of course he is talented but that’s not the only thing an artist needs; discipline - is a key element for success and this something that needs to be enforced by the parents and gurus who train these talents. Being in the US for 8 years and taken part in varies shows I have come a cross lots of talents especially kids who has the same problem but I think all of them needs to learn a lot from people likes SPB sir, Jesusdas sir, Chirtra madam, Janaki amma and of course from Harish and your self – as how an artist should be.

Chinmayi, what ever I have mentioned here is just my view on this topic again good luck for you and I am sure when u get that MILLION RUPPEES (kumudam.com) - you will be able to study everything that u wanted (hats of what a thought).

Keep up the good work and may god bless you with more success.

Best.
RJ - from Arlington, VA

Hi Chinmayi,

In my opinion, most people voted for Krishnamoorthy after seeing hs father's last clip, not for his talent. If Krishnamoorthy has so much pride that he won SSJ, how is he supposed to become an experienced and talented singer like SPB or KJJ? His parents must teach him to not be so egotistic. Krishnamoorthy should know that he should not take this as such a big deal. It is only the start of his singing career. Moreover, he should not be treated as a famous celebrity with such a bad and boastful attitude. To see a young mind with such a large ego and a bad attitude is quite upsetting...

Anonymous said...

hi chinmayi,
one of ur fans....what u say is 100% rite...i am a parent of 1 yr old kid and i am actually correcting myself to teach him ..parents are first teachers..from whom they learn a lot by just observing silently...
Yes..with the SSJ,when i saw him in the last show..where some ppl came and wished him in the beach... when someone congratulates you...anybody wud be humble and thank first...
but surprisingly he was more into interrogating.."whether u voted for me" repeatedly whoever he met.. so incase if they wud have voted for the second one..what he will talk next??? so he expects ppl to say that he is the best and no one is near to him... attitude matters a lot to take to heights...hopefully they realise it before its too late...

The most appropriate punishment for people of this kind would be to show them what they did (or play the videos) when they become a little bit more mature at a later part of their lives, just as Ramya Krishnan used to watch the marriage video of her hero(Rajini)in Padayappa movie(though she did it for a different purpose). Had there be a painless way to stop existing and the absence of fear associated with it, one would love to have a go at it under such situations of utter embarrasment. Having said this, would we be looking into our posts at some later time in future and empathizing the same thing? A bewilderment! I think it is best to sit and watch whats happening instead of trying to redesign, for we are mere players with null intelligence in comparison to our designers who seemed to have planned immaculately which key I am going to type in next. There is a tagline to the movie "BABA." "Known is a drop, unknown is a ocean." I am sure no one understands it, for to truly understand it one needs to know how big the oceans are in comparison to a tiny drop."

Hi Chinmayi
I felt the same when I came to the MRC stadium. Many people were arrogant and some were polite and well behaved.
Surprisingly none of the polite people I saw became selected, except Vignesh. Others who made an appearance were not noticed by me on that day I came with my daughter in Chennai.

I would request you to publish the few (if you did notice them) polite people and also comment. I firmly believe this because that politeness is mistaken for cowardice and lack of talent. Even one of the judge wasn't polite to many II round participants.

I agree in this competitive world one must persevere hard to succeed, but never forget polite behaviour. I am remembered of Mrs Southey's schoolday rhyme"NEVER SAY FAIL" where she advises to be pushy. Sadly mistaken in today's context that being pushy people give politeness a severe go by. People in the garb of being pushy forget the hard work and tireless efforts required

Please atleast make a comment on those who were polite!
