Latest - Shyam Milan in 'Agra'

Surprising but true, an out and out Tamil movie has a Hindi song, a Bhajan to be precise.
The day I landed up to record this song, it was pretty late. That particular day was kinda busy so this recording was scheduled for around 8 pm. We recorded this song in Rayhana ji's studio. I heard the track and was waiting for him to play something else, but was stunned when I was handed the lyrics and asked to sing. It has the asthayi and antara. Not too lengthy. The music director, Mr Balu played the track and asked me to pick up the tune, which I duly did. The way the song started, and the way it sounded on my headphones as soon as I entered the voice booth..... super. Once inside, we kept going to make expressions better, sangati-s better. Around the end of the song, he asked me finish off with a slight sob.
It so happened that as the recording progressed - the session probably lasted an hour or probably less, it was hard to control breaking down. I tried my best to reserve it for the safe, private confines of home. But when it was time to record the last portion, it just so happened that I broke out crying. Mr Balu was unnecessarily apologetic, he did not know why in God's name I was crying. He probably thought it was because of singing the same lines over and over again. Of course I'd have loved to go on.. anyway. I do not know why I broke down, lyrics, or the notes, the composition or the heady mix of it all. Or probably a God knows. But post the real sobbing session, my sinuses took awhile to clear and we successfully finished the song.
This song, Shyam Milan, will always be one of the closest to my heart.

Great song Chinmayi - no doubt. Well sung.

Now about the crying part - It might be due to various factors...To me the raaga might be one reason - Isn't it Charukesi? Pardon me if I am wrong.

The other reason could be age/times in life related!

Either way, very touching song indeed!

Hats of to Mr.Balu for a wonderful song.

One of the things that shocked me during my recent chennai trip was the posters of this movie AGRA...I was about to take a picture and send it to the Police commissionar's office..but they vanished pretty soon from public view.!

Now - when I listen to this song and think about that poster! Gosh..what a difference!!

Well,
Ek naya roop aur dekhne ko mila aapka - fantabulous singing.
Coming to the crying part, I tend to see it as a phenomenon. Whenever we reproduce a sound or hear a good version of reproduction of sound which has the scale and pitch to make your blood flow faster, we tend to cry. This rendition of yours gave me goose-bumps , so it's not a surprise that you broke down by the time you were done!
What do you say?

I felt the same way listening to "pibare rama rasam" rendition from the movie Morning raaga....

narayan venkitu: ahir bhairav. People make movies and they design the posters in a manner that it will have recall value with the audience.. too much struggle goes into making a movie, and if at all something happens to strike me as inappropriate, I dont comment. Too much money and too much effort goes into making a film. And sometimes the initial curiosity is probably necessary for bringing the audiences to the theatre at the opening. Also, just FYI I myself have not seen the posters of the movie. Wonder how I missed them. But it could also be because I am at the driver's seat most of the while and I dont have the luxury of wall-watching :)

FYI the poster is actually the leads kissing..kekeke.. in case u wanted to know..:)coz thats what i saw when i went to raaga.com

Chinmayi,

I had a question about the song. I could not hear it at the link you provided (technical difficulties on my computer) but heard it on musicindiaonline.com. MOI has just one stanza as a part of the song.

Did you record just one stanza or are there more stanzas? It is one of the songs where I would have loved to hear three stanzas or so...

Chinmayi Sripada /Chinmayee said...

MM: it seems to work fine.. and yes one stanza..this is big enough for a tamil movie. and the last line. I ll take that as a compliment

The song is superb!!

Regarding Ferrari, it used to be my dream car as well. But after working in the auto industry for over 10 years, I look at cars as just sheet metals and plastics. No more passion for cars. Thank God, I didn't become a doctor!

In one of your previous articles, (Srilanka Concert?) you had mentioned about starting running/gym. Being a runner myself, I have been meaning to suggest that to you - not that you are on the plus side, just as a precaution so that you can maintain yourself. Hope you take it in the right spirit.

Chao.

Chin, numerous times I've cried, either singing or listening to music..i've always had this curiosity to find out from professional singers how they r able to sing thru, without throat choaking..the lyrics already is packed with emotion and raga is always chosen to re-inforce the emotion..given this emotional load...spoke to priya sisters abt it but they replied as if they r just singing mechanically and its nvr hapend to them itseems..weird ...this post of urs convinces me that true singers, for whom singing is not an activity but a state of mind, r invariably touched at heart, unconsciously..cheers ! Ur a blessed one !
